Leo Romeo

I'm raising money for my brother and sister in law. My nephew Leo was just diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma a rare bone cancer effecting less then 200 people a year. As they prepare to start the toughest battle of their lifetime they need to be focus on what's important, getting their little boy better.  Below is the story of Leo's journey taking from my sister and laws online journal.

My name is Heather, & my husband's name is Leo (we call him big Leo). We have been together for over 10 years & have 2 gorgeous sons together, Leo Romeo- 8 & Rylan Lyric- 6. On October 10th our older son, little Leo, went in for an ankle xray at Urgent care. He had a football injury 3 weeks prior & although alot of the swelling had gone & it no longer it hurt him, it still had a puffy look that concerned us. We knew he didn't want to go for xrays & begged us not to, but our gut instincts pushed us to go. After the xray, they said it was a fracture & Leo was so upset. Football is his life. He LOVES playing on the White Mites pop warner team as a right guard & always tried his best, to be his best! He loves the Patriots & watches every game intently. Knowing his football season was over, broke his heart. The doctor at Urgent Care told us to call the orthopaedic surgeon the next morning for a follow-up & to get a cast put on. The next morning I called & was awaiting a callback with an appt. date/time. Instead I recieved a call that Ill never forget. It was the radiologist from Urgent Care saying he reviewed Leo's xray & saw a very concerning mass, on Leo’s fibula. It was possibly a cyst, a benign tumor, or worst case scenario, a malignancy. I almost dropped the phone. How could this sports injury, that doesnt hold my son back, or hurt him, be anything like CANCER!? I immediately felt sick, & worried. I sat in disbelief, & again waited to hear back, but now with an a ppt. at Mass General.
The next morning, October12th, we went to the Sarcoma & Oncology suite at Mass General. He had a blood test, & we booked his MRI & biopsy for the following Tuesday, October17th. Things with the anesthesia, MRI, & biopsy went smoothly but the tone of the nurses, radiologists, & doctors sent worry flooding through my body. We left there with knotted stomachs, a sleepy/loopy child, & an overwhelming feeling of angst.
After waiting 8 long days for the biopsy results, the call that will forever haunt us & send me into a cold chill, came. The words, "Im sorry to tell you this, but Leo has Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare cancer." That 1 sentence ripped our hearts out. I had a full out panic attack, fell to my knees & screamed. I was hysterical & big Leo & I just held each other & cried. Those loud, gutteral, cries that you don't even know can come from you but escape deep from your soul at moments like this.
Why him? Why our beautiful, smart, happy, loving, kind big boy? Why any child? A little over 3 months ago, we lost the boys' Grammy, big Leo's mom, to cancer. She was only 55 years old & a 2nd mother to my 2 beautiful boys. That was so very hard, & its still so raw. The boys know what Grammy endured was long & arduous, & the word "cancer" is treated like a bad word in our home. I know they say, "you are only given the obstacles God knows you can overcome" but this seems like Mt. Everest was just slammed down in front of us. My head is spinning & reeling & my eyes are raw & burning from the infinite amount of tears I've cried today. We'll be headed back to Mass General this Friday to talk with doctors & begin to make a plan to heal our boy. We are a strong family, filled with love & care for one another & I know we will get through this. One day at a time, one step at a time, one obstacle at a time. We will fight, & kick cancers' relentless, heartless ass. We will persevere, fight this, & we will win....
