Lend a Hand for Ansley’s Medical Expenses

Hi, everyone. I have been struggling to tell people about this, but in late October, I rushed to the ER for surgery because I had a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy. A ectopic pregnancy is a rare case where a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the main cavity of the uterus. (In my case, mine was stuck somewhere in my left fallopian tube.) Ectopic pregnancies cannot proceed normally and cannot result in a live birth. The main danger is that a ectopic pregnancy could rupture, cause internal bleeding, and that is a fatal emergency.

Before I knew that I had an ectopic pregnancy, no one knew what was wrong with me. I was bleeding like a period, but for over 20 days. I was hoping it was just because I usually had irregular periods, but the pain in my lower abdomen became more unbearable as time went on. For over a week, I had to go various doctors, clinics, ER's, and imaging/radiology clinics, and I kept getting mixed diagnoses. There was a presence of slowly increasing pregnancy hormone (HCG). The various ultrasounds (internal and external) showed absolutely nothing in my uterus. It was really scary, I was getting diagnosed as pregnant one visit, spontaneous miscarriage at another, and I just wasn't getting better and the pain and bleeding were getting worse.

Finally, after many visits, a doctor had identified my condition as a fatal ectopic pregnancy, and said I needed immediate attention. Joe rushed me to University Hospital where we were seen by the doctors. They again couldn't find anything on the ultrasounds, so they sent me away and said I should come back in 48 hours. I went home for a nap, woke up and the pain was unbearable. Every bump in the road was a sharp pain. I had to go back to University Hospital and demand that they at the very least just take a look and operate on me.

The ectopic pregnancy had ruptured. I had internal bleeding, and my left fallopian tube was so damaged, they had to remove it. I am still able to have children since I have my right fallopian tube, thankfully, but I now have a 10% higher risk of suffering an ectopic pregnancy again. I'm really lucky and grateful to be alive today.

If you read all of this, I really appreciate it. I've always seen that people say it's a traumatic experience, and I really feel it some days. It still gets hard to talk about. I feel loss, shame over something out of my control, and now devastated as I struggle to pay my medical bills. Please lend a hand if you can, anything is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
