Legal Representation in Court

My name is Leticia Guzman and I’m raising money to cover for my legal representation in court coming up pretty soon. I am based in San Diego, CA.

I am a mother to a beautiful daughter named Rosita. She is the light of my life. I am blessed to have been the vessel that brought her life. Becoming a mother pushed me to get involved into activism and I eventually decided that in order to pave the path for my daughter to live freely, it meant that I was to become a revolutionary. 

Becoming a revolutionary also meant becoming a full-time mother. I felt how much capitalism was absorbing me from motherhood and so I decided to prioritize my daughter’s life, by any means necessary.  I dropped out of the university and grounded myself onto what it was that I truly wanted because the direction I was headed towards would limit my ability to raise my child the way I would love to. Since then, I have dedicated myself to my family, my community, and my self-discovery. It has been the most spiritually embracing and eye-opening experience thus far. 

I am currently self-employed and managing to meet mine and my daughter’s needs financially, but I am not making enough to receive a loan from a bank to pay for my legal fees.  I am in no way prepared financially to cover for my legal representation, so I’ve created this GoFundMe to hopefully cover for it. 

I was arrested and thrown in jail in mid-August for protesting against death in the hands of police brutality. Many have protested against the same reasons and have gotten arrested just as I have. The problem will not go away with simply donating to my GoFundMe, the only thing this donation will do is help keep me away from the hands of the state and keep me at home to care for my daughter and nurture her without stepping a foot into the jurisdiction of the court system. 

If the court system finds me guilty for the charges against me, then I could possibly face up to 3 or 4 years in jail. I could be separated from my daughter for that long and just thinking about that tears me apart. I could not bare losing out in that crucial part of her development, so I am here pretty much begging for community to hear my cries. I am living anxiously as I await trial and its eating me alive. I’ve seen first-hand how the court system can easily decide the fate of someone’s entire livelihood, so I want to make sure I have an amazing team to help protect me and my daughter. The rate for the lawyer I consulted with to represent me is $3,500. I’m hoping to meet my GoFundMe goal for this, but I’m also open to finding a lawyer that would be willing to go Pro Bono for me and take on my case. 

The only thing that keeps me running right now is my faith that the state’s descent into deadly fascist acts will be countered with a loving revolution. A revolution that will give people the power to break their own chains and that the forces working against humanity will never stand a chance, ever again.
