Hi this GoFundMe is for Jordan Shiveley's legal and emergency fund while he is responding to a defamation lawsuit. You might know me better as Dread Singles of the (@hottestsingles) twitter account and VoidMerch. However what you might not know is that I am also a comics publisher.
Last year it came to my attention through personal accounts and testimonies of victims that another publisher and member of the comics community had allegedly been harassing and engaging in sexual predatory behavior in relation to several individuals in the comics community.
I felt it my duty as just a person who wants to be a basic decent human being and as a comics professional to release a statement saying that I believed and stood with the victims and that predators such as the named individual had no place at festivals or any space that was considered safe for these artists.
Cut to present day where the accused predator is now suing me for defamation for 2.5 MILLION dollars; insane I know, (as well as suing the victims and others in the comics community who made the same stance)
I have to respond within 20 days of this summons or he wins by default. First move is to get an extension then fight it. But I still have to hire a very expensive NY lawyer (where the suit is) and go to court to prove all this.
Some initial lawyer conversations have said that this most likely will drag out over a year and end up being incredibly expensive. Just an INITIAL retainer with 10 hours of work involved is being quoted around $10k and that doesn't take into account all the lost time from work etc that I will have trying to deal with this.
This amount I'm trying to raise seems huge but it might not even end up being the total amount needed! It is insane to me as a normal mid range poor person that this is happening. So I have to appeal to YOU for help. I don't want to let this abuser get away with silencing his victims and detractors and I will continue to stand up (now in court I guess) against him if I can find the backing through you all to do so.
