Legal Fees for Chana's Family

Donation protected
We, the family of Chana Brown, told our story about Vallejo Councilmember Hakeem Brown's history of domestic violence because of the seriousness of his crimes, which bordered on torture (Open Vallejo Article About Hakeem Browns Violence Against Women  ), which caused us to feel responsible for sharing this information with the community.   Hopefully, we helped the great people of Vallejo make an informed choice when voting for mayor.  While we have received amazing support and stories of survival and resilience from Vallejoans, and domestic abuse survivors, we have also suffered great personal loss.

Councilmember Brown cut off all communication between our family and Chana's son - a son he didn’t see for over 6 years – a son he didn't call, write, visit, or financially support.  We are the only family he has ever known, and we have been entirely cut from his life.   We have not seen our 8-year-old grandson/nephew in 7 months now and have not had even a phone call in over 2 months.  Hakeem Brown has made it clear that he blames us for his loss in the Vallejo mayoral race.   He has fabricated stories to justify his absence in his son’s life, placing us to blame for his lack of involvement in raising his child.   We wanted to believe his stories of personal responsibility and redemption, but he has instead blamed the very people he has victimized for years.

This child, who is haunted by his mother's murder, is suffering every day that he is denied access to his loving family.  We miss this sweet, smart, generous, and big-hearted child every moment of every day.  We miss seeing his face light up while at the museum or the zoo or him simply teaching us something that we didn't know.  We miss his hugs and his laughter, and we are desperately concerned about his current environment.

Due to Councilmember Brown's actions, Chana's mother has retained the services of legal counsel to assert her legal rights of communication and visitation under California law.   We do not bear any ill-will against Mr. Brown, we care only for the safety and well-being of Chana's son and to honor her memory.  We humbly ask for help with our legal costs as they will be high, and we know that Mr. Brown will make this as financially painful as possible as he can for our family.

Any money left over after the legal case will be gladly donated to charities supporting women and children of domestic violence in Vallejo.
