<div>Marco was brought to the United States from El Salvador when he was six years old. When he was nine, a family friend and babysitter began to sexually abuse him. The abuse was brutal and continued for years.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When Marco was 17 years old, he killed his abuser after learning that the man had set his sights on Marco’s six year old nephew. In Marco’s criminal case, the psychological evaluator, the defense attorney, and the prosecutor all agreed that, in Marco’s young and traumatized mind, there was no other way to protect his nephew. Marco had no prior history of crime or violence.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Marco turned himself in to police the day after he killed his abuser, and pled guilty to manslaughter. In December 2023, after serving 13 years of a 15 year sentence, Marco was released early due to good behavior.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>However, Marco was released directly into ICE custody; while he was in the United States legally as a child, his conviction caused him to lose his immigration status. ICE is now holding Marco in detention while the immigration court decides whether to return him to El Salvador, a country in which he has not lived since he was a small child and barely remembers, and a country in which he would be in great danger. Deportation would not only endanger Marco’s life, it would permanently separate him from his mother, his siblings, and his wife, whose support will be indispensable in his process of recovery and healing.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Marco is a victim of unspeakable abuse who has spent his entire adult life in prison. He has served his time. He deserves compassion, not more suffering. Marco’s attorneys have agreed to represent him for free in his deportation case, but there are still many expenses to be covered, including expert witnesses and investigators. Having investigators and expert witnesses will increase the likelihood that Marco can win his immigration case, but they are expensive. Money contributed to this fund will be used to pay those expenses. We have capped the fund at the amount we think will be necessary for Marco to defend himself in immigration court. If any money is left in this fund after the immigration case and any appeals are complete, it will be gifted to Marco upon his release.

<div>----------------------------------------------
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
