Legal Costs Opposing Hotels

In July, 2018 a coalition of Yonkers citizens from Ludlow Park, Park Hill and Van Cortlandt Crest came together to fight the development of hotels at 189 South Broadway and 602 South Broadway. We support development on South Broadway that would serve our community and enhance its character. The proposed uses would do neither.
The proposed hotels would hurt our community by increasing traffic and noise, worsening parking problems, putting pedestrians and school children at risk, and bringing transients to our neighborhoods.
We recently engaged an attorney to help in the fight. Our grassroots efforts, outlined below, are not enough. We needed the counsel and advocacy of a lawyer experienced in land use and zoning. Someone who could present the questions and concerns the City Boards need to have grounds to delay, alter or stop the proposed developments. We have found that person and are now turning to you to help cover the cost.
PLEASE consider giving whatever you can. It is important to support the effort to block both proposed hotels as each will affect all of us. Think of it this way: whatever you choose to contribute will be a small outlay given the potential negative impact of the proposed hotels on our home values and quality of life.
ACTIONS TO DATE:
Met with Mayor Spano, Council Majority Leader Sabatino, Council Member Pineda Isaac and representatives of the City Departments of Zoning, Development and Planning and the South Broadway BID.
Mobilized a letter writing campaign expressing citizen opposition to the proposed hotels.
Documenting the opposition of the immediate neighbors to the proposed developments via door-to-door canvassing.
Parking log effort of the immediate areas surrounding the proposed hotels.
Submitting detailed statements to Planning and Zoning Appeals Boards regarding risks posed by proposed hotels.
Meeting with developers of proposed hotels to hear them out and represent our point of view.
Organizing citizens to attend meetings. October and November planning and zoning meetings were well attended by the neighborhood and well represented with prepared presentations.
We are now preparing for December followup planning and zoning meetings.
