Legal Aid for Human Rights Hero Liang Songji

Let me introduce myself. I am Yang Zili (born in 1971), a former computer engineer and independent researcher.
From 2001 to 2009, I served an eight-year prison sentence on charges of “subversion of state power” in connection with the New Youth Study Group case.
From 2009 to 2014, I conducted research on migrant workers’ health rights and children’s education rights at the Transition Institute in Beijing. The institute was shut down by the authorities at the end of 2014 due to its involvement in supporting Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement.
From 2016 to 2017, I worked at an IT company in Shenzhen, but was forced to resign after investigating the disappearance of university students in Wuhan.
In 2018, I received the Reagan-Fascell Fellowship and went to the United States as a visiting scholar.
I currently reside in Maryland, USA, where I work as an editor for yibaochina.com and China Journal of Democracy Quarterly, and volunteers with several human rights NGOs.
I am raising funds for legal fees for Mr. Liang Songji, a Chinese human rights activist.
Liang Songji, born in 1976, originally resided in Guangzhou China. After experiencing judicial injustice, Liang Songji began actively participating in domestic human rights activities, including holding signs in the streets, posting online, and providing financial support to democracy and human rights activists.
In 2014, he was sentenced to 10 months in prison for obstructing police officers who were arresting three people, including Ma Shengfen, who were preparing to commemorate the first anniversary of the Southern Weekend incident.
In 2018, he was detained for 37 days with charge of Disturbing Public Order due to repeatedly holding signs and gathering with others while refusing to cooperate with the police.
In 2019, he was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison for "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" for posting online to advocate for a female lawyer Sun Shihua who had been humiliated and abused by the police.
Liang Songji is also one of the political prisoners included in the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China's government database.
Due to the continuously deteriorating human rights situation in China, Liang Songji was forced to leave the country. Without a US visa, in October 2023, Liang Songji swam from Mexico into Texas and surrendered to US immigration authorities. He submitted an asylum application while in detention, but it was rejected by the immigration authorities, and he also lost his case in immigration court. He then appealed to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), and fortunately, the case was remanded for reconsideration. He has been waiting for a new hearing in immigration court for over two months.
As a friend and fellow human rights activist of Liang Songji, I have found a pro bono lawyer who will charge a minimum of $2500 to file a habeas corpus petition with the court to restore Liang Songji's personal freedom, which has been deprived for over two years.
Mr. Liang Songji is not a criminal who should be imprisoned, but a hero who has made outstanding contributions and great sacrifices for human rights in China.
