Hi! We’re Eden and Tybee, co-founders of Leaves4Leaves. We’re 13-year-old twin sisters from Brooklyn, New York. When we were younger, a pear blossom tree on our block always bloomed each year on our birthday. We grew up with that tree, we loved it. Two years ago, a truck backed into our beloved birthday tree, damaging it. A week later, it was cut down. Now, due to global climate change, temperatures are too low around our birthday for nearby pear trees to blossom. We want your help in solving the global problem of deforestation.
Every second, one and a half acres of forest are cut down around the world. Twenty football fields’ worth of trees die every minute. Around 4,500 acres of forest are burned, bulldozed, or felled every hour. This loss contributes to 17 percent of annual greenhouse gas emissions. Imagine what difference you could make by planting just one tree.
One tree. It may seem small to you, but it can really make an impact. One tree produces approximately 260 pounds of oxygen each year. Twenty percent of the world’s oxygen is produced in the Amazon Rainforest, which is also where deforestation is most prevalent.
For our Bat Mitzvah project, we are devoted to spreading awareness and helping to solve this problem. We have already planted trees on three continents. For the past year, we’ve also been taking photos of trees wherever we go. We’ve designed notecards and postcards using these images. Each card uses a different photo and is made of 100% recycled paper. The proceeds from the sale of these cards are going towards global reforestation.
