Leavers not left -supporting care leavers

Donation protected
Hi I’m Rayne, I’m a 27 year old care leaver from Stockport.

This year has been tough on everyone, we have all depended on each other more than ever even if we haven’t physically been together.

Friends and family zoom or face time calls, picking up shopping for each other and dropping it on someone’s door step and just doing what we needed to to make sure the people we care about were supported through this difficult time.

Society often forgets about the young people that are thrown out into the world from the care system often with little support, broken down or fractured family relations, very little money, often still dealing with the impact of childhood trauma and then expected to be able to run their own home at a much younger age than the rest of the population. These young people can be expected to live on their own in a flat from the age of 18 and by the age of 25 will receive no support as a care leaver.

Lockdown and covid have hit these young people hard, these young people were isolated, living in poverty, struggling with mental health, fending for them selves with little support long before covid but covid has made all of these issues worse for care leavers.

After lockdown I set up a group for local care leaver will the support of Start point Woodley and Taylor’s chippy. The chippy donated meals and a place for the group to meet. The group grew week on week, we began working with other local organisations such as Man about a dog supporting mental health needs and Alvanley family practice to support the care leavers attending.

The community as been wonderful and so kind to the group, the group is already making such a positive impact on the young people attending.

Due to local government restrictions the group can no longer meet at the chippy, I have secured a new covid safe venue for the group to run from. Due to moving venue I’m now in need of funds to cover the additional costs of running the group from a different venue and so I can continue to offer a meal to the group.

Care leavers often live in food poverty so providing a meal at the group is really important.
