GOALS 4 GIRLS - LEADERSHIP & EMPOWERMENT FOR YOUNG BLACK GIRLS (11-16)

‘It starts with YOU, it continues with HER’ - Founder & CEO of Goals4Girls , Francesca Brown.

In response to the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests, one of our Goals4Girls participants - 16-year-old Daniella - wrote a poem titled 'Prisoner'. Please listen in the video below.

Daniella is a wise soul, who has experienced more in her young life than most adults. She is brilliantly smart, eloquent, black and proud. Her words echo the thoughts and feelings of millions of young people who are hurting in light of recent events. We need to listen to our 'Daniellas' if there is any hope in making the world a better place for our young people.

As part of the fight for racial justice, this year we are extending our summer programme and expanding our academic mentoring programme.

We have taken our time, making carefully considered plans about how we redress our young people's education around intersectionality and inequality.

The Goals4Girls programme is a safe space. Sometimes the school environment can be judgemental, punitive and insensitive towards girls, especially black girls. It is time to build up our young people!

Through our work we’ve uncovered 5 'key barriers' to our young people's development:

1. Lack of education and awareness surrounding intersectionality and inequality

2. Lack of opportunity for positive black female role models

3. Lack of opportunities for girls, especially black girls and young women

4. Identity surrounding cultural, social, emotional, and physical barriers

5. Safe spaces

Goals4Girls plays a significant role in the growth and development of girls and young women from disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme helps to develop significant physical, mental, and social benefits for young people. Providing them with skills and experiences to help on their journey into adulthood.

Help us raise £25,000 to support our girls and young women!

Our aim is to educate our girls and young women on topics around inequality, intersectionality, oppression and emotional intelligence,  specifically focusing on:

- Negative stereotypes of black girls and young women
- Racism
- Sexism
- Poverty.

Working with over 400 participants - 82% of which are young black girls and young women - who live in some of London’s highest areas of deprivation,  a number of our participants have already experienced first-hand, how systems are failing them and fuelling inequality:

"I should not be made to feel uncomfortable because my hair is different!" -Ivanna, 13-years-old.

Imagine being told your hair is too big, or your natural hair isn't 'acceptable' as it 'breaks the school uniform code'? This is one of the many examples of 'everyday racism' our young women experience.

These experiences often lead to isolation and exclusions. Something Ivanna narrowly avoided with the support and intervention from her Goals4Girls mentor.

Young black women face many barriers before, during and after leaving school.

Institutional racism and sexism do not simply stop when you hang up your school uniform, and that is why it is important to give our participants an educational programme on the issues that black girls and young women face in life.

At Goals 4 Girls we break down social and personal barriers through creating an inclusive female environment in which our participants have the opportunity to achieve goals and make their voices heard.

2018/2019 IMPACT:

* 94% of girls and young women who were at risk of exclusion at the start of the academic year, completed the entire academic year in school

* A total of 400 girls have taken part in our development programme, with a retention rate of 87%

*90% of the participants on the programme have reported a significant improvement in confidence, resilience and friendship making

*76% of our participants by Year 2 improved their behaviour for learning, with schools reporting an increase in positive behaviour, attendance and punctuality

We are seeking funding to raise £25,000 to expand our mentoring programme and continue our summer programme.

The Goals 4 Girls mentoring programme is an integral part for our participants learning and development. Focusing on units covering mental health, goal-setting, career development and identity, the programme sets about creating future young leaders.

Your support will allow us to inspire girls and young women to achieve their goals, break down social barriers and make their voices heard!
