Support the Peter deMarsh Memorial Award

Forest-dependent communities in Canada and around the world lost a champion on March 10, 2019, when an Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 157 aboard. Peter deMarsh was flying to a conference in Nairobi on his way to a United Nations conference on family-owned forests and climate change.

As Chair of the International Family Forestry Alliance, he worked on behalf of more than 25 million family forest owners worldwide. Peter was also President of the Canadian Federation of Woodlot Owners.

Peter lived in the small community of Taymouth, New Brunswick, where he was a beacon of sustainability celebrated for starting a local recycling program and also for striding the world stage on behalf of sustainable forestry and rural development. Famous for bringing his dusty hiking boots wherever he went, he left a global footprint.

To celebrate Peter’s legacy and support his passionate advocacy on behalf of forests and rural development, the Canadian Federation of Woodlot Owners, the International Family Forest Alliance and UPA-Développement international is establishing the annual Peter deMarsh Memorial Award.

Join us as we work to support the next generation of students and rural community organizations who embody Peter’s spirit and commitment to rural development and environmental sustainability. With enough support, we hope to provide two channels to celebrate Peter’s legacy and continue his important work:

- Bursaries for eligible Canadian or international graduate students who are conducting research in a Canadian University on rural community development, woodlot owners’ associations or the role of woodlot owners in helping to solve pressing local, national and international issues relating to equality, opportunity and sustainability.

- Financial support to give a voice to representatives of grassroots community organizations in Canada and internationally seeking financial support to attend an international conference on developing rural communities through forestry.
