Hit By Car: Lauren O'Rourke's Accident Recovery

Donation protected
At approx 3.22pm on Dec 2
Lauren was crossing the street near her apt. Burnet rd /Justin Ln.
A car travelling 40mph ran a stop light, it was struck by another car, then struck Lauren.
She was dragged/tossed and landed over 100 ft. from impact.
Her left iliac crest (Pelvis) shattered - some of the pieces came out of her body through her skin, Other pieces propelled themselves through her abdomen acting as projectiles. Her bowel and colon are perforated in several places.
She also has 2 compound fractures (protruded skin) on her left arm.
Her right wrist is also broken/smashed (see pic of watch and broken jewelry)
She had a gash on her scalp that required 5 staples.
Her left knee has 3 out of 4 ligaments badly damaged and needs repair.
Temporarily lost vision - still blurry but slowly returning to normal.

SO FAR:

Lauren has had abdominal surgery to repair the bowel & colon.

They think the surgery will not have to be repeated - however, there are many complications to watch out for in the future.

Arm & elbow: She received 2 plates and 22 screws

Pelvis: Not enough bone to pin or fuse. So they removed (hopefully) all fragments, and will need to rely on scar tissue from bone and muscle to form. Future surgeries probably but nothing scheduled at this time.

TO COME:

Carefully monitor her healing from recent surgeries.

Needs a neurological consult this week for vision.

Very long rehab and physical therapy ahead…

Ellie (Lauren's Mom) has named her supporters “Lauren’s Village” because this WILL take a village. Her whole family is so grateful that Lauren is surrounded by such love and support for the challenges ahead.  Miracles can happen when we work together.

We've seen it before and we shall see it again!!

WE LOVE YOU LAUREN!!!!!

All donations will go towards her care and expenses while the insurance companies... do what they do.
I'm sure you all are aware of how complicated things can get and how long things can take.
But rest assured:
Any donations that are not used can/will either be refunded or donated to one of the many charities Lauren is an advocate for.

Thank you for whatever you can contribute whether that be money, time, physical help or prayers!

Updates will be on her Caring Bridge site: caringbridge.org/visit/welovelaurenorourke

For clarity:
~My name is Sally Strecker. I'm a friend of Lauren's in Austin, Texas.  I have run a few GFMe's before so I jumped in because I knew people would want to help Lauren.  I've since met Lauren's awesome family. Asking for this kind of help is not in their nature and makes them feel a bit uneasy.  Some friends and I have convinced them that fundraising is not only normal these days - but necessary! There are so many costs now, and down the line associated with an accident of this magnitude.  I promised them transparency and communication with all donors. We will be linking this to Lauren's account because she will be able to make decisions for herself soon.
