Laurene Sinema Special Quilt Exhibit

The Project
To highlight the amazing talent and contributions of Laurene Sinema to modern quilting, a special committee is working to bring a special exhibition of her work to International Quilt Market Houston in October 2020.

The Backstory
Laurene Sinema (1929-2003) is known as the Mother of Quilting in Arizona. In 1978, a quilting revival was underway in Arizona. Laurene Sinema was at the head of that movement as she helped establish the Arizona Quilter’s Guild and founded- with partner Janet Carruth- the first quilt shop in Phoenix, The Quilted Apple. Over the years she authored 8 books and numerous magazine articles, served on the International Quilt Council, an advisory group to Karey Bresenhan- the founder of International Quilt Market and Quilt Festival, was a sought-after speaker, quilt show judge, and taught classes around the country and internationally. She started a pattern company called Laurene Sinema Designs and designed three lines of reproduction fabric for South Sea Imports. She loved people and they loved her back; she was authentic, warm, and always had an open heart and listening ear. Laurene passed away in 2003 after a three year battle with cancer.

The Cost
The many costs associated with this endeavor include: entrance fees for the exhibit, transporting the quilts, purchasing insurance for the quilts and all display items, appraising the quilts (in order to insure them), setting up the exhibit in George R. Brown Convention Center, and others.

How You Can Help
In order for this exhibit to be a success, we need contributions in any amount and sponsors at all levels. Please donate to help share Laurene’s legacy and the legacy of quilting!
