Lauren's Half Marathon

Hello! I’m Lauren and I hate running.
Foolishly, I’ve signed up to do the Oxford Half Marathon on 7 October 2018 – as a challenge to myself but also to fundraise for Rumbletums Cafe and Training Project, a charity close to my heart and my home, back in Nottingham.
For those that might not know, I have twin sisters (Nicola and Claire) with Down’s syndrome.
For those that do know already, you’ll know how awesome they are!
For the past 4 years, Nicola has been one of the trainees at Rumbletums Cafe and Training Project, which was set up in 2011 to offer vocational training and work experience placements to young people and young adults (16-30) with learning disabilities. Since working at Rumbletums her confidence and conversational skills have blossomed and the project itself is brilliant and is such a fabulous part of the community.
During its first year, and my first year at University, I volunteered at Rumbletums working in the kitchen and front of house and it was a fantastic experience. Its success has grown over the last 7 years and Rumbletums now employs five staff and has space for up to 30 trainees. As well as being a fantastic training project, Rumbletums has become a community hub in Kimberley and also offers a parent and toddler group, a Silver Screen film night for older people, regular social events for young people with disabilities and subsidised room hire space for local voluntary organisations and community groups. For the last 7 years, Rumbletums has rented its premises at a discounted rate, but now the landlords want to sell the building within the next year... at a cost of £200,000. Rumbletums is, therefore, faced with having to buy the premises, move out, or wind up the project.
There are no suitable alternative premises locally and no-one associated with the project, now or in the past, wants it to end. The need for supported training for young people with learning disabilities is as great as it ever was and the local community values the other services that Rumbletums offers.
Rumbletums is going to try to raise £200,000 to buy the building in order to continue - and expand - the project, and for this we need all the help we can get.
I’d love to be able to help this project continue to succeed, allowing a place for my sister and others, to develop their skills and be part of the community. I don’t expect my run to be fast, but I’m going to make it all the way round! If you’d be interested in sponsoring me, please do!
