Laura's second chance at life

On october 7, 2020 our dear friend, Laura Hellwig, suffered sudden cardiac arrest at age 29. Her husband, Sven Hellwig Jr. gave her CPR and close friend Jared Smith called 911. The paramedics got there with a very fast response and she was shocked multiple times to restart her heart. They did a procedure on her legs called IO or Intraosseous which involves injecting directly into the marrow of the bone. She was hospitalized in the ICU from that night until the following week Thursday, October 15. During her stay she was in a coma and had to undergo therapeutic hypothermia. In the following days as she started to awake, she had to undergo several tests on her heart and mental cognitive function. She was diagnosed with Long QT Syndrome. Once determined that her heart was in adequate shape, the cardiologist suggested that she should get an ICD which is an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. This would require surgery to implant the device which would be connected to doctors who get a weekly update on her heart. This device ensures that her heart does not go into cardiac arrest again. Upon discharge from the hospital, she had physical therapist, occupational therapists and nurses assigned to many visits. She was limited to her daily activity and struggled with low blood pressure on top of dealing with complications from the Intraosseous damage to her right leg. She is on a road to recovery and is in positive thoughts. She has struggled with medical bills and payments as a result of this misfortune, in addition to major loss of her pet sitting business due to this pandemic.
