Gabby’s Fight Against Brain Cancer

My sister and her husband received the worse possible news a parent will hear, “Your daughter has brain cancer.” Right before the holidays of all time.
Before explaining her condition let me share a few things about my niece. Gabby is a brilliant force to be reconnened with. She is tiny, yet mighty. She is sweet and empathetic and loves her pets, brothers and sister, and her family with her whole heart.
Gabby is 14 and was diagnosed with Gliomablastoma brain cancer. The doctors describe it as a very aggressive and advanced form of cancer. The surgeons managed to remove the larger mass which then was graded at a 4. Not what we wanted to hear. This means the tumor was very large, deep and as mentioned very aggressive. Gabby recently underwent her second brain surgery 3 weeks shy of her first. The second was to remove cancer tissue and cells to be part of a new study. In place of chemotherapy a vaccine was created out of the cancer cells to be injected back into Gabby’s body. The goal is that Gabby’s own immunity will combat the cancer. These injections are paired with 6 weeks of intense radiation.
Gabby, my sister, and brother-in- law have a very long road ahead of them. They will need to drive Gabby to and from the hospital everyday for 6 weeks so she can receive her radiation treatments. My sister and her family live 2 plus hours away from the hospital and between gas and hospital parking along with other medical expenses the bills will soon mount up.
