Laura Angelini's Fund

Family and friends, this is Elissa Angelini, Laura Angelini’s daughter here with a long awaited update on what has been going on with our family. As most of you know, my mom, who is the kindest, most generous person I know, was in a terrible car accident on September 9th. She was driving home from work and picking up dinner for her and my Dad around 7 pm. While she was waiting to turn left onto Mulberry Dr. from Old McHenry Rd, she was rear-ended, jolting her car sideways into oncoming traffic where she was then immediately struck for the second time on her passenger side. I will post some pictures below, but this accident was horrendous and we are so lucky that she is alive. When talking to the police officers, firefighters, and doctors, they all agreed that the accident could have been fatal. She was unconscious at the scene, and EMS brought her to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, IL. She didn’t wake up until a couple hours later, and that is when she was able to tell the hospital staff my Dad’s cell number, because he was out searching for her since he knew she was on her way home hours prior.

The injuries she sustained are 12 total fractured ribs, 6 on each side, pelvis fractures in two spots, transverse fractures of the left 4th and 5th vertebral body transverse processes, fractured inferior right scapula, grade 3 AC joint separation, and a collapsed lung with chest tube placement. She also is experiencing some issues with her short term memory, and a CT scan of the head showed swelling around the temporal lobe of her brain. Doctors are hopeful that the confusion is associated with the massive concussion in combination with the heavy pain medications she is receiving; hopefully nothing neurological.  And with all the pain and the inability to take deep breaths, she is developing atelectasis in the lower lobes of her lungs which puts her at a risk for pneumonia. We are still pending surgery for the pelvis and scapula. She is very weak and in a lot of pain, but she is thankful to be alive.

We are unsure about where this road will lead us, but we know we are going to have a lot of expenses coming our way. This year 2020 has really knocked our family down.  My Dad was laid off of work in May due to the coronavirus global pandemic, and now, with my Mom’s outrageous medical expenses, the physical therapy she is going to need, and a car replacement, they are overwhelmed. My mom has been receiving so much love and support and we will forever be grateful. I had the idea to start this GoFundMe page in order to help raise money for our family to deal with these expenses. We are never the ones to ask for help, and please don’t feel pressured to donate. We will always accept prayers. I wish I could take her place in that hospital bed, she didn’t deserve this to happen to her, and I hope we get more answers soon regarding the outcome of her health and how this horrific accident occurred. On behalf of my family and me, we thank you all for your continued love, support, and prayers.
