My name is Marie Vera and I am currently a candidate for a Master’s of Science in Global Health (MSGH) at Northwestern University. As my final practicum before graduation, I must participate in an immersive program geared toward addressing health inequities on a global scale, managed by the non-government organization (NGO), Child Family Health International (CFHI). CFHI operates in ten locations around the world, and each has several programs geared toward closing health care gaps. I will be participating in the Women's Reproductive Health and Midwifery Program in Puerto Escondido, Mexico.
I need to raise $5000: $2765 for tuition costs and placement with a host family, and $2245 for travel, food, health care and any miscellaneous or unexpected expenses. My $350 deposit was due on August 31, 2018, and I have until October 15 to pay the rest of the tuition.
Supporting my attendance to this program means investing a small amount of money to help our neighbor, because when our neighbors do well, we do well. Your donations will help to support ethical, humanitarian health care and education provided by one of the best NGOs in the world; further legitimizing the practice of midwifery via continuing education provided through partnerships with Northwestern and other institutions. This is especially important because the training will increase survival and good outcomes for both mothers and newborns by preparing midwives to recognize signs that might cause premature delivery, hemorrhage, seizures or stroke.
My attendance is important to me for those reasons, but I have a personal investment in obstetric care for our neighbors south: My paternal grandmother was a midwife in Belize, and my father and all but one of his siblings was delivered by a midwife there. 88% of the world’s population still seeks and receives care from Traditional Healers; I feel called to help them access scientifically-based training to reduce maternal and fetal deaths whenever possible. By completing my Master’s Degree, I will continue to find ways of empowering healers to provide better care for their communities while strengthening the trust and familiarity between them and their patients.
