Latshun Lacey, BSN, RN, a future Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, was shot and killed on Saturday July 20, 2019 at the hands of a man she was previously involved with.  The lives of so many were changed forever on this day, especially that of her children she adored and would give her life for without hesitation.  She was one of the best mothers a child could be blessed with. She was also a daughter, a sister, a relative, a coworker, a compassionate nurse, and to me and many others, a wonderful friend! She was a boss babe! A strong intelligent  woman; independent and kind-hearted. This woman worked at least five 12-hour shifts a week just so she, as a single mom, could give her children everything they needed and wanted!  She traveled often and truly lived her 41 years on this side of Heaven to the fullest!  She was encouraging and thoughtful; committed and dedicated to fulfilling her dreams.

I met Lacey over 10 years ago as we both were aspiring to become Nurses on the campus of Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. We graduated in 2010 from SUSON, Southern University School of Nursing. Our friendship progressed over the years. She loved all her classmates and literally tried to keep up with all of us. We always looked out for each other with the job market and kept each other abreast with the best jobs that paid the most money because we both were go-getters!  She motivated me and pushed me into Nurse Leadership, which I didn’t think I could do. She would say many times “Pink, you should apply for the supervisor job.” I’d say nah Lacey I’m good why don’t you?  She would say “guh no indeed I’d end up cussing somebody out and lose my job" lol, If you knew Lacey, I’m sure you can hear her saying these words jokingly. It was her personality! I finally listened to her after 5 years of her insisting I go this direction. Not so much because I didn’t believed in myself, but partially because she encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, and rise above every obstacle. Lacey always pushed those around her to be great!

On behalf of her SUSON family, her graduating nursing Class of 2010, and her coworkers at Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System, I feel we have to do something for this truly phenomenal woman but most importantly a phenomenal mother! She was looking forward to supporting her 2 daughters in college next month and also leaves behind a 6 year old son.  I would love to help her children with any immediate expenses they may have right now and with college expenses in the near future. Her family would appreciate anything you can do! This is solely for her beautiful children not a plead for money to bury her because she wouldn’t want that.

Thank you and May God Bless you!
