¡ACTUALIZACIONES AL FINAL!/UPDATES AT THE END!

¡Hola a tod@s!

Hi everyone! My name is Virginia and I’m a biologist and ethologist (animal behaviourist). I moved from Barcelona to Costa Rica three years ago following my dream of working for wildlife conservation and, specially with wild cats. A little bit more than a year ago, in January 2019, I finally found THE place: Las Pumas Rescue Center and Sanctuary, placed in Cañas, Guanacaste, Costa Rica, where I currently collaborate with the care and rehabilitation of the rescued animals.

Las Pumas Rescue Center and Sanctuary was founded by a couple from Switzerland, Mrs. Lilly Bodmer and Mr. Werner Hagnauer, in 1989. It’s the oldest rescue centre in Costa Rica and one of the only two certified by GFAS (Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries) in all the country, which guarantees animal welfare and safety measures for both animals and staff.

The mission of the organization is to rescue, rehabilitate, release and guarantee the quality of life of the Costa Rican wildlife, motivating the respect and love for these animals and also educating about their nature. For that, it counts with two separated areas of work: The Rescue Center and the Sanctuary, in a total area of 7.5 Ha.

The Rescue Center (5 Ha), is where there’s the Clinic, Quarantines and the Pre-release area. All this is closed to public, since it’s where the animals who will be able to be released are under process of rehabilitation. Human contact could interfere in this process, so only a little part of the Staff is authorized to enter.

The second, the Sanctuary (2.5 Ha), opened to public, is where the animals that couldn’t go back to nature due to different physical (eg. vision problems) or behavioural (eg. too used to humans) problems remain for life. The mission with them is to provide them with the best cares.

Why donating?

Las Pumas Rescue Center and Sanctuary is administrated by the Hagnauer Foundation, a non-profit NGO. The monthly cost of operation is 20.000$. Usually, close to 70% income to cover the cost of the medicines, food, maintenance of the enclosures and care of the animals comes from the entrance of visitors to the Sanctuary. However, due to the current situation with coronavirus (COVID-19) it was needed to close to public. That’s why today, more than ever, we need YOUR SUPPORT to continue with the labor of rescue, rehabilitation and release of Costa Rican wildlife, as well as providing the best care, guaranteeing the quality of life of all the animals.

Note: Since GoFundMe doesn’t allow creating a campaign with a Costa Rican account, I decided to create this campaign by myself, since I’m Spanish, with the authorization of the Foundation and I’ll send them your contributions depositing them in their bank account.

*Updates on the objective amount*

29th March: The water bomb broke! We've had to urgently buy a new one in order to have water for preparing the milk for the babies, cleaning animals' enclosures... And let them drink! The new water bomb cost 1.061,50€, which is added to the campaign's objective, making a total of 1.560€.

18th April: Already closed to the public for one month! We've calculated how much we need to cover the costs for taking care of the animals (medicines, food, enclosures maintenance...) for this month and it's about 10.000$. The objective is updated to 10.000€ since the water bomb is not included in this calculus.

*NEW UPDATE (21st July 2020)*

It's been 4 months of intense work at Las Pumas Rescue Center and Sanctuary!

Each and every person involved in the care of the animals, both at the Sanctuary area and at the Rescue Center area, have given their best to provide, as always, the best attentions to all animals under our care.

And, since the last month I didn't post any communications in this Campaign due to the amount of work, I've decided to upload a video (somewhat long) explaining all the changes and updates at this time. You can see it in the "Communications" section, but here you have the highlights!
