[UPDATE as of 5/15/20]: The Guatemalan government imposed strict restrictions on movement and a complete shutdown on bank visits and many daily jobs. For the mothers that Project Olas works with, this means insufficient income to support themselves and their families.

Project Olas connects Spanish students with moms in vulnerable Central American communities to provide immersive language learning live via WhatsApp. With Georgetown University professors and NGOs on the ground, we develop personalized curriculums, facilitating meaningful conversations and connection.
In Zona 3 of Guatemala City, a community we serve, the average woman has a 6th grade reading level and makes $3-$5 a day doing dangerous work in the Guatemala City garbage dump. Project Olas provides a safer, sustainable income opportunity. Through our professional development programs such as English language learning, emotional support networks, and self-confidence workshops, Olas moms develop skills that enable them to advance their careers and personal lives.
In order to sustain all that we offer, we need your help. The COVID-19 crisis has shut down Guatemala City, trapping Olas moms in their hot champas–small huts made out of metal sheets. Together, we can promote human connection and combat poverty. We kindly ask for your donation, which will support sustainable work opportunities, training programs, subsidies for low-income students, improved Internet connection in Zona 3, and more. Anything helps!
