The Dr. Larry J. Alexander Memorial Educational Fund The Gift that Keeps on Giving
This holiday season, I need your help in making the difference in the lives of students in need. God has placed it on my heart to bless local students who need help in pursuit of their dreams to attend college.
For low-income students in the United States, attending college is bleak: only one-third of kids from families at or below the poverty line attend college. Of the students who make it to college, only about 11% graduate.
My father, Dr. Larry J. Alexander, understood that these alarming statistics required not just sympathy, but action. That’s why he dedicated his career to improving the quality of education for underserved students. He was an Area District Superintendent in the Houston Independent School District, under the leadership of former Secretary of Education Dr. Rod Paige. During over 35 years of service, he was a teacher, principal, and a mentor to countless students. My father was extremely passionate about education and his dream was to see every student succeed.
Unfortunately, in September 1999 he passed away and his journey came to an end.. But his legacy lives on. And his dream can still be realized. I will carry the torch and pursue my father’s vision to ensure that all students are successful, regardless of their family’s economic status.
Evan E. Worthing High School is very dear to our family's heart because my father was a graduate of Worthing and returned years later to serve as principal. Therefore, I’m launching an educational fund in his honor that will raise money to reward at least 10 graduating seniors from Worthing High School with IPADs for Christmas to assist with their college journey. If we exceed our fundraising goal, the remaining funds will be divided equally among the recipients to aid in their future educational journey.
I hope that you will support this endeavor with a donation of any amount. It’s the holiday season and you may not have additional funds to give, but sharing this message is a blessing in its self.
Thank you in advance for your support and contributions to students in need.
I look forward to sharing our progress through go fund me updates.
Sincerely,
Ashley Brooks
