Laos elephant conservation and school renovation

Village school project
In July, I am hoping to travel to Loas in South East Asia to volunteer in a rural part of the country called Sayaboury.
During my time here I will be volunteering within a local primary school, teaching an education programme that focuses on English, basic hygiene, nutrition, recycling and waste management. With our help it is possible to teach these children vital English skills, helping them to break the poverty cycle and aiding them with the skills to have the best future for themselves and their family. Whilst volunteering at the school, we will also be improving the infrastructure including constructing new classrooms, bathroom blocks and water-catchments. In addition, we will be adding a fresh coat of paint where needed and colourful murals, to create a much better learning environment for these children.

Elephant conservation centre
During my time in Loas, I will also be staying at an elephant conservation centre and undertaking  various tasks to rehabilitate formerly domesticated elephants in order to one day release these beautiful creatures back in to the wild. Some of the tasks include setting up enrichment exercises, building and maintaining the centre’s infrastructure such as the veterinary clinics, elephant nurseries and viewing platforms so we can observe the elephants socialisation time.

Due to the ivory trade, the domestication of elephants for tourists and the logging industries to name a few, these elephants are under serious threat of extinction to the once known 'Land of a million elephants' which stands to lose not only its elephant populations, but a major component of Laos cultural heritage. These elephants are no longer reproducing because they are being worked to the point of exhaustion and their life spans, birth rates and quality of life are considerably below acceptable standards. However, with the support of all of the volunteers and the amazing Vesa Abroad team we can help to save these gentle giants.

With your support, it will make it possible to improve the lives of many Laotian children as well as assist in the rehabilitation of the Asian elephant and protect the ancestral culture.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read about the plans have to volunteer over the summer. I would be very grateful for any contribution, big or small!
