From January 1st until December 31st in 2019, the International Year of Indigenous Languages, I have set myself the challenge of having a book either in my hand or in my pocket at all times, provoking conversation about the significance of literacy and the devastating loss of languages around the world. I will be flooding myself with access to language and culture to raise awareness for those who don't have that same access.
Did you know that of the worlds estimated 7000 languages around half are expected to disappear by the end of the century? This would be a catastrophic loss to cultures and identities all around the world. We can fight this, however, by documenting languages in new and innovative ways to make sure that these languages can still be taught and thrive.
Imagine if Harry Potter, Macbeth and Mrs Dalloway were reduced to scribbles on a page or erased from existence. A lack of literacy can severely affect ones self-confidence, and deprive people of the right to develop their identities and experience their art and culture in full colour.
