Lance Cross Memorial

I regret to announce the recent death of Lance Cross. Emily, referred to her husband as "her personal hero". He passed away suddenly in their home on August 15, 2018 at the age of 56.

Lance retired from the U.S. Forest Service after 30 years as a firefighter. Most of his career was on the Los Padres National Forest in Southern California. He moved to Nevada City in 2009 to work on the Tahoe National Forest. He retired as the Deputy Fire Chief in 2011.

As a part of a management team he served his local community as well as our country. He responded during 9/11. He worked during many natural disasters including hurricane Katrina as a part of the air operations. He has trained many firefighters over the years.  His legacy continues on in the men and women on the front lines of wildland firefighting today. One women he mentored said "My first thought at any incident is . . .   What would Lance do?"

He was born in Honolulu and raised in Hawaii until he was 18. He then moved to California, but always lived his life with the Aloha sprit.

He was always a devoted father and husband. He repeatedly told people "I married my best friend".

Emily would also like to honor his service to the communities he protected through a memorial bench. One in the Ojai Valley and one at their home in Nevada City.

Lance is dearly missed by Emily and his daughter Chelsea Cross. He is also survived by 2 step- daughters, Claire Stovall and Lauren Stovall Spencer. Lauren's husband Charles Spencer is also a first responder. This year was his first season in Wildland Fire. He is on the Los Padres National forest.

Please send stories and photos to the family here or on Facebook. Your Lance stories bring smiles and comfort to the family. Pictures are needed too. Hawaii and Fire pictures.
