Lalo's struggle with cancer

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Eduardo, and I'm a 31 year old organizer and photojournalist who was born in Mexico City.  This past August, I was diagnosed with stage 1b osteosarcoma in my right leg, in my hip and ankle.  While the doctors I have seen are optimistic about my chance of survival with chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, I do not have health insurance to cover the cost of the therapies and other expenses related to the disease.

Like anyone fighting cancer, I am nervous about my prognosis.  But the lack of health insurance has especially caused me undue stress.  This is why I'm hoping my community that I have worked alongside with in support of many causes and movements will come to my defense .

As someone who has spent the last 15 years focused primarily on supporting the struggles of indigenous peoples in Mexico, denouncing root causes of displacement of people from Central America to North  Americas in order to save their lives and supporting families that courageously struggle to find their loved ones who have disappeared as a result of state violence, I know how important it is to help communities and individuals in their most vulnerable time of need. Learning that solidarity is one of the gestures of the greatest affection among the peoples of the world, is why I am writing to you today to ask you to stand with me in supporting my healthcare.

How can you help?

In order to adequately cover my medical costs and related fees (ie transportation), I need to raise $15,000.  These funds will be used to pay for the radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions, and will also help support the costs of my follow up post treatment appointments, which include chest x-rays, blood tests and MRI scans.  Moreover, donations will help me cover the costs of, medications, physical recovery therapies and psychological therapy.  As you can see, there are several expenses that I have to cover, and your donation can make a huge difference!

Why you should help?

My life has been guided by the love of community and defending those most vulnerable.  I have also experienced violence firsthand against journalists and activists in Latin America  which led me to leave the piece of land that I knew as home.  In the last four years that I have lived in the United States, I have seen several friends, colleagues and family members die, disappear, or flee my homeland.

But during this time, I had the opportunity to meet many of the most powerful human beings that could exist in this world.  Every day is marked by examples of resistance by brave people that every day put their bodies on the line to fight for their right to live in peace, with dignity, and with justice.

That is why I want to live, to keep the memory of those who are no longer here and to stand by the side of those who resist day by day.  I am my communities' keeper and they are mine.

With your support, I will be able to continue standing in resisting injustice and violence in solidarity with our families all over the world. My calling and commitment is to keep fighting to speak against forgetting, against death, for memory, and for life.

My life is guided by the dream of seeing all marginalized people collectively liberated.  I hope that I live long enough to see and celebrate this moment.  Your support will help me do just that.

In solidarity and gratitude,

Eduardo
