The Learning Center/Together for Hope provides opportunities for students to earn their GED. Your support is critical in changing the lives of folks who live in one of the most impoverished places in Louisiana and the U.S.
Your gift will provide a scholarship to cover the cost of the GED test ($100) and a practice workbook ($20).
No gift is too small or insignificant! All proceeds go directly to students who are working incredibly hard to better their own lives.
For the past year, director Marc Boswell has been teaching GED courses through the local community college. This continues to be a great partnership, but the community college closes every evening by 4:30 PM, along with the local library, due to tight state and local budgets.
Many students are faced with difficult decisions between pursuing their GED and taking work opportunities and caring for family members during the day. Several of these students would be able and willing to attend tutoring/class sessions if they were only provided in the evening.
East Carroll Parish currently ranks top in the state of having the highest per capita rate of people living at or below the poverty line - around 43%. As of 2014, this placed East Carroll Parish around 7th place of most impoverished counties/parishes in the country. Over 60,000 people in the Northeastern Louisiana region do not have a high school diploma.
The need is great, but there certainly are folks who are willing to put in the time and effort needed to further their education and develop their careers...but opportunities have to be available. If you feel you can help in any way, please reach out.
