Will you donate to help us serve those in need of food in our downtown Oakland community?
The Lake Merritt United Methodist Church in Oakland, in partnership with the Alameda County Community Food Bank, has been serving the Oakland Community for over 35 years by providing free food to individuals and families in need. Currently we provide food through a monthly food pantry for the community, a biweekly food pantry for nearby community college students at Laney College, a twice weekly program that delivers lunches to the unsheltered near our church, and a weekly dinner for residents of a nearby temporary shelter. Here is what we have accomplished:
*With support from the Alameda County Community Food Bank, in 2019 we distributed over 3,500 grocery carts to county residents through a monthly food pantry.
*Twice monthly we make food available to Laney College students, where almost half the students struggle to afford meals.
*Twice weekly we deliver lunches to the unsheltered and/or hungry living in our area - We served 8,000 lunches in 2019.
*In 2019, in partnership with the Housing Consortium of the East Bay, we launched a Friday night dinner program called Feasting with Friends for a new homeless shelter near the church. We served 2,000 Friday evening meals to these neighbors!
*The Alameda County Community Food Bank provides some food for free and often supports us with generous grants, but federal budget cuts make it necessary for our church to purchase additional food at a cost of $5,500 a year. We also provide hygiene products for our unhoused neighbors at a cost of $2,500 a year. We truly run on a shoestring budget with countless hours of volunteer service!
Our clients face uncertainty in many areas of their lives, but we seek to remain an unfailing source of food. We also feed the hearts of our many volunteers. Our programs provide volunteer opportunities for over 600 people a year - families with young children, college students, local businesses, service clubs, and local High School students (who enthusiastically make up the majority of our volunteers).
We are also raising funds through our annual LIFT Benefit Concert, on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at 3:30 PM, featuring a terrific lineup of musicians, all donating their time and talent. Come hear the concert too! Concert and ticket information is at https://liftconcert2020.eventbrite.com .
