The LaGuardia Chapter of Best Buddies International is looking to raise money to put on future events, fundraisers, and give back to the organization!
Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Our programs empower the special abilities of people with IDD by helping them form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently, improve public speaking, self-advocacy and communication skills, and feel valued by society.
Last year, I created a Best Buddies chapter at LaGuardia and had remarkable success: after recruiting a dedicated and passionate officer board and an equally enthusiastic group of members, we organized several events throughout the year, including an amazing concert in April. At the end of the year, we were awarded the Best Promoter's Chapter in New York State, had the opportunity to fly to Indiana University to attend the international Best Buddies Conference, and received a generous grant from the Laura B. Vogler Foundation.
We returned this year full of new ideas to improve our chapter. We recruited more members and have partnered with the Keswell School in downtown Manhattan, providing us with the opportunity to create Buddy Friendships!
In order to continue our chapter for future years, we ask that anyone who believes in the Best Buddies' mission of inclusion and respect for all to donate any amount of money. We will use these funds primarily to finance another concert - bigger and better than last year! With this concert, which will be produced and performed by LaGuardia students, we hope to raise further awareness about the IDD community and give back to the organization to advance the One-to-One Friendships, Integrated Employment, and Leadership Development programs.
Everyone should have an equal opportunity to make friends, find jobs, and exhibit their unique talents. Our goal is to put Best Buddies out of business; Best Buddies envisions a world where people with IDD are so successfully integrated into schools, workplaces, and communities that its current efforts and services will be unnecessary. Until that vision becomes a reality, the organization will continue to educate middle school, high school and college students, community members, corporations, and employers about the emotional, functional, and natural needs and abilities of people with IDD.
