Lagoon Outlook Garden Rehab

Our community garden has been ransacked.  Please help us repair it.

Garden Background:
Saturday 9/11/18 we celebrated the Lagoon Outlook Garden. Over the course of 2017 and 2018 volunteers have been working on creating an accessible garden at Marquette Park Lagoon. The idea of creating an accessible garden came as a natural continuation of the commitment Gary’s Miller Spotlight’s transportation and infrastructure action group, Access Miller, has to creating a life-long community for all.

In 2016, with the support and partnership of Causes for Change International, N.W.I.P.A., the City of Gary, Legacy Foundation, Mortar Net Solutions and generous donations from the community the first universally designed kayak launch in NWI was installed in Marquette Park Gary. From the success of our sunset paddles, critical mass was showcased for the need for an accessible garden adjacent to the kayak launch.

Access Miller and Causes for Change began designing this project in the fall of 2016. With support from the City of Gary’s Park Board and the park staff, implementing the Lagoon Outlook Garden (aka the LOG) began in 2017.

The Lake County Purdue Extension Master Garden Program served as the impetus for this project, although community volunteer hours are counted towards the Master Gardener recognition, many of the volunteers of the LOG apply themselves for the art of gardening and learning.

The Lagoon Outlook Garden is an accessible garden designed to follow the seven principles of Universal Design:
Equitable Use
Flexibility in Use
Simple and Intuitive in Use
Perceptible Information
Tolerance for Error
Low Physical Effort
Size and Space for Approach and Use

The Lagoon Outlook Garden aims to be place where people with and without disabilities can feel welcome, come together, learn, relax and work along side one another, while enjoying nature and the outdoors.

Aim of the Lagoon Outlook Garden is to promote universal design where gardening and the waterways can be appreciated by All, include the Arts and Nature in education
