Lafayette No. 1 Trip

Lafayette No. 1 is a One Act Play performed by Connally High School of Waco, Texas. This play is very special to our students as it was written by our theater director, Mandy Conner, after she took a trip to New Orleans. She was inspired to write her own play based on what she saw as she visited the cemeteries in the area.
The play, Lafayette No. 1, is set in the present and 1816 and centers around orphans struggling to survive and one girl trying to make a difference in the world around her. As the story finishes, the orphans encourage a tourist to “tell their story.” The underlying message of the struggle is to want more for themselves and to “be the light” through their misfortune.
We are trying to sponsor a trip for the students to visit New Orleans and Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 where our director was inspired. We already have several of them facetiming our director from our older cemeteries in the Waco area because they are so connected to the story! Our hope is to further inspire them in telling the story of the children orphaned by the yellow fever in the 1800's by giving them the firsthand experience of seeing their monument, experiencing the New Orleans culture and truly hearing their story form local historians.
This play has already won at the district, bi-district, and area levels of competition. It will be performed again at the regional level of competition on April 20, 2016 in Humble, TX. Placing in the top two at the regional competition will secure a performance at the State competition in late May.
This is sure to be an unforgettable and great educational moment for our students. This will be a once in a lifetime experience seeing what inspired a person to write a play with such a powerful message, all the way to telling the story on stage!
