Help solve two problems with one solution. New York City's 91%-immigrant workforce of 85,000 Uber and Lyft drivers is now functionally unemployed due to the Coronavirus crisis. Drivers still have about $2000 in vehicle expenses to pay every month. And as independent contractors, they are often blocked from receiving unemployment benefits.
But their services are still needed. There are over 1 million people over 60 years old in New York City. Under CDC guidelines, they are high-risk and should stay home. But they need meals.
Over 100 TLC-licensed drivers have volunteered to make emergency home deliveries, but they need help covering the cost of gas, insurance, and car payments during the crisis.
