Ho conosciuto Samson in un bar a Kampala, Uganda, nel luglio 2024. Samson mi ha raccontato il suo lungo viaggio non privo di insidie intrapreso dalla Sierra Leone, di dove è originario, della difficoltà di integrazione in Uganda e del suo sogno di riuscire a raggiungere la madre e la sorella a Roma, confidandomi di non vederle da più di 20 anni. Ci siamo separati con la promessa che una volta tornata in Italia avrei contattato sua madre Betty, per raccontarle del nostro incontro e così ho fatto. Attraverso le lettere e le telefonate scambiate con Betty sono pian piano venuta a conoscenza della situazione critica in cui tutt'ora si trova. Betty vive con la figlia e i due nipoti minorenni in un minuscolo appartamento romano. Il compagno della figlia, l'unico che fosse riuscito a trovare lavoro in Italia, è da poco deceduto, lasciando la sua famiglia in una difficoltà economica disastrosa.

Betty ha contratto una forma aggressiva di cancro al seno diversi anni fa, e non ha i mezzi necessari per affrontare le cure, vedendosi continuamente rimbalzata in direzione di costosi studi medici privati. La sua vita è costellata da anni da dolori lancinanti e visite notturne al pronto soccorso per un po' di sollievo.

Il suo obbiettivo è stabilizzare abbastanza la sua salute per riuscire a viaggiare e riabbracciare il figlio, l'unico di 7 ad esserle rimasto oltre alla figlia che vive con lei a roma.

Betty è molto preoccupata per il figlio, che a Kampala conduce un'esistenza difficile e che a sua volta soffre di Epatite senza avere la possibilità di accedere a delle cure.

Questo crowd founding nasce con l'intenzione di coprire le spese mediche di Betty e di Samson, con la speranza di riuscire poi a farli rincontrare in Uganda. Una volta esaurite le spese mediche, tutto il ricavato andrà devoluto alla sussitenza della famiglia di Betty finchè sua figlia non sarà riuscita a trovare lavoro.

I met Samson in a bar in Kampala, Uganda, in July 2024. Samson told me about his long and tricky journey from Sierra Leone, where he comes from, the difficulty of integration in Uganda and his dream to be able to join his mother and sister in Rome, who he has not seen in more than 20 years. We parted with the promise that once back in Italy I would contact his mother Betty, to tell her about our meeting and so I did. Through the letters and phone calls exchanged with Betty I have gradually come to know the critical situation in which she is. Betty lives with her daughter and two underage grandchildren in a tiny Roman apartment. The daughter’s partner, the only one who had been able to find work in Italy, has recently died, leaving his family in dire economic difficulties.

Betty contracted an aggressive form of breast cancer several years ago, and she does not have the means to afford treatment, being continually bounced off to expensive private medical practices. Her life has been punctuated by years of excruciating pain and nocturnal visits to the emergency room for a little relief.

Her goal is to get her health back on track to be able to travel and embrace her son, the only one of 7 left besides the daughter who lives with her in Rome.

Betty is very worried about her son, who leads a difficult life in Kampala and who suffers from hepatitis without having access to treatment.

This crowd founding was born with the intention of covering the medical expenses of Betty and Samson, hoping to be able to meet them again in Uganda. Once the medical expenses are exhausted, all the proceeds will go to the family’s allowance until her daughter has been able to find work.
