LA Marathon for NKLA

In January 2007, ten-year-old Chubbs the pug joined our family after we found  at the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter. He spent the next eight years of his life on memory foam mattresses or on the sofa watching The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills with his people. When he was eighteen years old, he crossed over surrounded by people who loved him.
In July 2008, Millie the Coonhound was born in a garden shed owned by a man who is now in jail for animal and domestic abuse.  She and her siblings were taken in by a local private rescue where we found her after seeing a newspaper ad.
In November 2011, we went to drop off some old blankets at a rural county pound. On one dog's papers, there was a red stamp indicating that was at risk of being euthanized. The next night Koda was sleeping in my room. Every year we take him for a special treat on the anniversary of his adoption and hug him a little tighter thinking about his spot on the kill list and whichever dog took his place.

In March 2019, I will be running the Los Angeles Marathon and raising money for No-Kill Los Angeles, a branch of the Best Friends Animal Society. This organization's goal is to make the entire city of Los Angeles a euthanasia free shelter system. Through education, reduced cost veterinary care,  and free spay/neuter clinics, they are keeping the animals out of shelters. In addition, they have their own no-kill facility and work with area rescue groups to identify and pull the most "unadoptable" and therefore at risk animals from the city shelters. Since their opening, the save rate for Los Angeles pets has gone up by almost 30%.

Even so, 22,188 dogs alone were euthanized in Los Angeles during the last tracking period. This does not include cats, rabbits, or any other species taken in by the shelters.  The most common reasons, in order, for euthanasia were:

Overcrowding
Illness or injury
Temperament
Age (including puppies under 6 weeks and dogs over 8 years)
Other

My goal is to raise $1,000 by March 24 for the dogs that the city of angels lost in the last period. Through education, assistance, and awareness, we will soon be able to call Los Angeles no-kill city.
