Feed La Comunidad’s Families in Crisis

We're turning $35 in to 35 lbs of food for working families in need, and delivering it straight to their doors. Restaurants like Mei Mei are stepping in to help our most vulnerable, and most essential community members.

La Comunidad  is a 501(c)3 community organization that supports the Latino-American community in Everett, Massachusetts. Our families are in crisis due to COVID-19, so we’re asking you, our friends and neighbors, for help.

The Context

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to shortages of goods like eggs, flour, and milk at grocery stores. With the mass closure of restaurants, the restaurant supply chain does not have these shortages, but it specializes in bulk quantities of staple goods and produce. While some restaurant suppliers have transitioned to home delivery, the order minimums ~$250 have been too high for most families to meet. In addition, managing the division of 50lb of flour and 15 dozen eggs among family and friends is too difficult a task for most to take on. Restaurants are uniquely positioned to have a closed and sanitary processing facility to convert the bulk items of restaurant delivery goods into smaller units for supply to families. Paired with contactless pick-up and drop-off, grocery box production from restaurants can successfully meet the growing food insecurity needs of our city, while keeping restaurant workers employed.

The Need

With the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of workers in the service and hospitality industry in Boston have been laid off, with limited or no income. Immigrant, working-class families have are especially vulnerable. Venturing into the grocery store increases risk of COVID-19 transmission and exposure. Our families also face limited access to health care, transportation, and childcare. Many wait in long lines at neighborhood distribution sites, food pantries, and schools, but often, emergency food runs out. These families are in crisis with no sure end in sight.

Our Strategy

In partnership with La Comunidad, Mei Mei Restaurant  will utilize their skilled staff, kitchen facilities, and vendor relationships to process wholesale food deliveries in to grocery boxes. Each unit contains approximately 35 lb. of staples and produce sufficient to cover a large portion of weekly food needs for each family. These boxes include potatoes, vegetables, fruits, rice, beans, and maseca. The estimated cost of each box is $35. Therefore, our initial fundraising goal is $10,500 in order to provide a first grocery delivery to each of La Comunidad’s 300 families.
