Dear friends and family,
As you may or may not know, I have been diagnosed with Panic Disorder and Social Phobia. The main symptom of panic disorder is panic attacks, which can be triggered by an event or come out of nowhere. During a panic attack, I experience intense and irrational fear and panic. This fear can be of other people or that someone is trying to kill me. The most common trigger for me is sudden, loud noises. Having social phobia means that I have an irrational fear of being out in public. I become very afraid, usually leading to me staying in my home for days at a time. My disorder and phobia often go together, me fearing I will have a panic attack out in public, so I stay at home.
To help with my treatment of these conditions, I have chosen to enlist the aid of a psychiatric service dog. This dog will be able to accompany me out to class, the store, and to restaurants . This will decrease my fear of being out, which in turn will lessen my panic attacks. My dog will be trained to carry out grounding tasks by Midwest Assistance Dogs, Inc out of South Bend, Indiana. They will train my dog in both tasks and public access, meaning the dog will know how to behave out in a public setting.
Unfortunately, this dog will not be free. it takes a lot of time and money to train a servic dog. Midwest Assistance Dogs is asking $6,000 for my dog. I cannot afford this out of my own pocket, so I am asking for your donations to help me raise enough money to pay for the dog.
My therapist, outpatient treatment program leader, and I believe that this will be an excellent tool and companion to help in my healing process from these two conditions, allowing me to freely go where I have been so afraid to go until now. I am not asking for a minimum donation, knowing that whatever amount you are able to give will be just perfect.
