Have a Little Faith

Donation protected

Faith's extended family is trying to raise money to assist Faith in her need to go to Sick Kids in Toronto.   Faith lives in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.   Please share!

In 2010 Faith was infected with the Herpes Simplex Virus which caused encephalitis.  Encephalitis is acute inflammation (swelling up) of the brain resulting either from a viral infection or when the body's own immune system mistakenly attacks brain tissue.

Recent excerpt from her facebook page:

"The last few weeks have been hard. Faith had an MRI to look at a vein in her brain that had appeared thicker in her MRI last year. The good news is that the vein is now back to normal so for now its a non issue. The hard part of it all is that her MRI shown just how extensive her brain injury is. She has had multiple MRI's in the past 4 years and we knew that she had a lot of brain damage but it takes time for cells to die and shrink before you can see the full picture. ...The scan showed that Faith basically lost almost all of her frontal lobes and has extensive damage to her temporal lobe. She also has smaller areas of damage throughout the rest of her brain. Frontal lobes are important for language, memory, planning, reasoning, impulse control, emotions as well as many other things. The MRI clarified the behaviors we see day to day with Faith but also made very clear that we will have a hard time managing them. Medications used to manage or modify these behaviors are not effective. They rely on changing how your frontal lobes works and processes things. Given the results of the scan we now have to take a step back and regroup. We are having the same issues with her seizures. There is just too much damage in her brain for the seizure medication to work as it would in a "normal" brain. We are going to take everything one step at a time and who knows what the future holds. In Feb. we are off to Sick Kids in Toronto to see a specialist and look at some treatment options. We are being cautiously optimistic that another set of eyes and ears may come up with some new ideas."
