Growing up, it was very tough for my single mother and I to get by. Then, she met my father. He stepped in and became the man, father, and husband he didn't have to be. In the years I had with my father, he taught me many things. He taught me how to be a man, loving husband, and how to always take care of my family and others. These were all characteristics he learned from my grandparents, his time in the U.S Navy, and his time as a Fireman.
Together he and my mom raised 3 successful children; me being the oldest. Mom stayed home with us kids, while he was the man of the house aka "The Provider". There were very few times I ever remember my dad not having a job. Towards the end of last year (while working as a foreman for a large construction company) he was laid off and all of his benefits expired.
Then on Labor Day 2014 our lives were flipped upside down. Tragically, my father passed away of a sudden heart attack at the young age of 51. Due to being freshly laid off, his life insurance had recently been cancelled. This left my mother with little savings, and a lot of expenses. All burial expenses came out of pocket which left very little. The family home was in his name and a lawyer and probate process was required. This took the cash down to almost nothing.
Ordinarily my mother and father were never ones to ask for a hand out. Instead, they were always the ones to step up and help our friends or family out when they needed something; even if that meant our immediate family sacrificing. When I would complain or ask why we needed to help out others with THEIR problems, they would always explain to me that "it's just something WE do". Now that I am older I can't tell you how much these things taught me and how appreciative I am for having gone through them. I now see the amount of lives they impacted and how many they changed for the better. If it were not for both of them, I can assure you a lot of my friends and family may not have made it out of the ruts they were once in.
With the above being said, my mother is now the one in need of assistance. She is in the process of being hired with a government agency but paychecks are still a ways out and there are debts she needs to pay. I am hoping that some good karma will roll her way and with the help of others, we will be able to help get her back on track.
This video is a tribute to my father but also speaks to how they raised me. At a time I was struggling with my father's passing, I couldn't be alone in fear of not knowing how to cope with my emotions. So I dug deep and did something that I knew always brought a smile to both of my parents faces....helping others! Enjoy, thank you, and God Bless!
