Our precious niece, Janice Pethel Dowker is facing the biggest challenge of her life. She has been really sick for the last 2 years without ever getting a diagnosis from the doctor. About 4 weeks ago she went to the doctor and said I am not leaving until you can find out what is wrong with me. This time, they listened and put her in the hospital. After 3 hospital stays, numerous blood tests, biopsies and fluid drainage they concluded that she has liver cirrhosis. She was subsequently transferred to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. The next day the doctors informed her that to win this battle she must undergo a liver transplant. They stated that because of her young age of 46, that she is not an alcoholic and the fact that she is so sick, as soon as a match becomes available she could be the recipient. It is still a hard realization for her that another family’s saddest day could be such a blessing for her and her family. As we are in the process of posting this message, we have learned that a donor liver has been located and if all goes well she will be in surgery this evening.
Despite the optimism and prayers for successful treatment and a full recovery, Janice and her family are also looking at significant financial stress. She has already been out of work for a month and her husband Duane must also take off work to be by her side during this traumatic time. A liver transplant is a major surgery and she was told to expect months of recovery, again unable to work. Additionally, the anti-rejection drugs can cost thousands of dollars a year for the rest of her life. Needless to say, Janice and Duane could use your assistance.
We are praying that the kind generosity of friends and family can help alleviate some of their financial burden. Anything you can give will be greatly appreciated.
