Kyrie's Transfer to Morehouse

On May 19th 2017 I graduated from Cerritos College with my AAT in Administration of Justice. The journey to this accomplishment was very difficult and at times I felt like I was losing all hope. I battled with homelessness on numerous occasions along with being a provider for my mother and brother when my mother could not do so. I battled with the stuggles of living in south central LA and nearly losing my life on many occasions. . 3 years ago I was a college drop out, had no job or stable income, had no sence of the direction of where my life was going, and also battled a deep depression. It was at my lowest where I decided that enough was enough and that a change was needed. I got up and decided that I will make no more excuses and find a way to get what I need done at any cost. I enrolled into Cerritos in Spring 14 and it was nothing but up since then. Each semester I studied as a full time student usually tackling 12-18 units per semester along with working graveyard for 2 years to keep a steady income. Early at cerritos I was on the verge of dropping our for a second time but I was introduced to the UMOJA Succsess program which quickly became a strong support system. In the program I was able to access resources like tutoring and leadership classes to help become a more competent student and effective leader in my community. I was taught by my counselors to not be afraid to share my story and to also be able to embrace my struggles and lead by example to others that may be in the same position I was in. I became a strong advocate and was voted to become a mamber of the Board of 9 leaders in the program. I was able to go on college trips, recruit high school students, and speak to the Board of Trustees on behalf of the program to recieve more funding because of stories like mine. Fast forward to current day and im proud of all my accomplishments. Not only have I earned my AA degree I also earned the opportunity to continue my schooling on a higher level. I have been accepted into 4 institutions to continue my learning with them being Cal State East Bay, Humboldt State, Stillman College, and Morehouse College. Morehouse is the school of my choice and now Im working diligently towards paying for the expenses of the fees and the move. I did not have the GPA to be admitted to Morehouse as a regular student which made me have doubts. I used my resources and connections to have my application removed from the general population and evaluated as a special admitance because of my journey to this point. I am reaching out to my Family, Friends, Peers, and Community for help with the cost and Im very thankful of those that do decide to help. I now have my foot in the door with this opportunity and now wish to pry this door open. Thank You
