We first met Katie's parents in Ukraine, while on vacation at Marianna's parents' place. At 6 months old, Katie was diagnosed with SMA Type 1. A year and a half later, she hasn't left the hospital. Katie has lost her ability to swallow or breathe naturally, relying on a feeding tube for nourishment and now requires a ventilator to breath, having undergone a tracheotomy. Katie has also experienced severe atrophy in her limbs.
Despite all of this, Katie is completely conscious and is a relatively happy child. However, the doctors in Ukraine have recommended that the parents take Katie off the feeding tube and ventilator, and let her pass, as they do not have the means to improve Katie's condition.
While there is a new drug that treats this disorder, it costs $750,000 per year and is in limited supply. All we would like to do is help get Katie home with her parents and give Katie a little more normalcy in her life. This can be done with the purchase of a portable ventilator and special wheelchair for Katie. The cost of the portable ventilator is $10,000 and the cost of the wheelchair is $2,000. After adding 5% that covers GoFundMe's cut, 2.9% for the processing fee, 25% for taxes the family will have to pay on the money received and a little buffer, we are trying to raise $17,000 to get this family what they need to bring Katie home. Extra would also be helpful so that they can do rehabilitation in Hungary, but for now we are just focused on getting Katie home.
