K'Yanna's Semester at Sea Journey

Donation protected
Hi! My name is K’Yanna and I am a double major studying Criminal Law and Psychology. I am currently a junior also minoring in dance at California University.

I have always dreamed of studying abroad, but didn’t know exactly where I wanted to go. Then I heard about SAS: 4 months, 11 countries. That was it. I want to see the world.

Semester at Sea is an abroad program through Colorado State University. During the Spring semester, I am currently taking a full course load while living on a cruise-sized boat for four months with over 500 other undergraduate students from across the nation. The benefit of SAS? I am getting an once-in-a-lifetime experience to travel to places I might not get to go to otherwise and gain some insightful global perspective. During my trip, we will stop at several different countries which include: U.S. (CA and Hawaii), Japan, China, Vietnam, Burma, India, Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco, and Germany. At each port, we either have a planned class or time to explore. During this time, I will have the chance to apply everything I’ve learned in class to real world situations in various cultures, communities, and cities worldwide, an opportunity few ever experience. In-country, I plan to spend my time visiting local schools, and learn about education systems across the globe. Additionally, I will experience the cultural traditions of each nation through programs that include sharing a meal with local host families in each country or participating in a traditional naming ceremony in a Ghanaian village. I will also have the chance to participate in service projects, visit historical landmarks, and gain an understanding of cultures different from my own. What I like about that, is that one of the best ways to learn about the world is to be completely immersed in different cultures which will be full of valuable experiences.

As you can imagine, a semester at sea is a once in a lifetime opportunity. However, it is also a very expensive once in a lifetime opportunity!  One semester of tuition with Semester at Sea is approximately the cost of an entire year’s tuition at my home institution. While most of my tuition was covered, my in country field classes were not! That is why I am humbly reaching out to you! I was able to come up with the funds with the help of my family to complete the programs in Japan, China and Hawaii! However, I feel like I have exhausted many of their funds, and feel awful having to watch them continue to struggle to make sure I complete these wonderful experiences. After all, my parents still have to take care of my two sisters and medically fragile brother!

I still have to complete classes in Myanmar, India, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco and Germany. While my tuition covered my room and board, ship classes, they unfortunately did not cover my in-field programs, which is why I am asking for your help!

The classes I’ll be taking on the ship will count toward the degree I need to graduate from California Lutheran University. But, more than that, it’s going to feel like an adventure taking those courses with a class full of both U.S. and international students while exploring the globe. Meeting new people from different countries and visiting different cities will broaden my perspective and allow me to make more of my life which I know it will impact me deeply.

In the words of Socrates, "Wisdom begins with wonder."
