Chad's Memorial Fund

My name is Shannah Smiley. I'm the sister of Chad Carnes. Chad  recently passed away on January 27th due to a severe sinus infection that spread to his brain. He was in ICU at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. He lived there with his fiancé, Brittany and his son, Colton.

Chad had a severe sinus infection 3 weeks prior and was hospitalized for a couple of days and was released with antibiotics. On the morning of Friday, January 23rd, Chad was experiencing headaches and severe vomiting. Brittany rushed him to the hospital and they continued to say it was the sinus infection. Chad's headaches were so severe that he was in a lot of pain and they gave him pain medication. Later that day, he began talking out of his head and eventually only giving one word responses that even led to a nod. By midnight, the infection spread to his brain putting him in a coma. The next morning, Saturday, January 24th about 8 a.m., the doctors went in and performed brain surgery to relieve the pressure caused by all the infection. The surgery was successful. The same day they went in and performed sinus surgery to remove the infection from his nasal cavity to his brain. Sunday, January 25th our entire family met with the doctor to discuss Chad's condition. The doctor said there was no change and he had a 10% chance of making it through the night. If Chad made it through  that night, they were going to do a tracheotomy to open up his lungs to prevent infection from spreading to his lungs. He made it to Monday, January 26th and his vitals were improving and they were able to successfully complete the tracheotomy. The morning of January 27th around 2 a.m. Chad had a stroke. The doctor completed a series of 5 tests that declared Chad legally brain dead. The Florida law states that if a patient is legally brain dead that they are dead. Chad passed away Tuesday, January 27th with his family surrounding him.

Chad was an organ donor and he was able to save 6 lives with his heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver. He also helped 2 people with their eyesight with his corneas.

Chad did not have health nor life insurance, so this leaves our family to pay for his medical and funeral expenses. He leaves behind a 6 month old little boy that won't have the love and support of his daddy and also his fiancé, Brittany. Please consider donating to Chad's memorial fund to help with medical and funeral expenses and also the  financial help of Colton.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts, prayers, and generosity.

Sincerely,
Shannnah Smiley
