Alex Meyer
Alex found out two weeks ago that he has cancer. We are not sure at this point if it is curable but right now his life is hanging in the balance.
Alex is 30 years old. He works hard in the Cowichan Valley and volunteers with the Chemainus Fire Department. He was training to become a full time Fire Fighter, which is his dream. As well, he was doing his EMT training. Alex loves helping people and is usually on the giving end. He loves the guys at the hall and found that working with them provided a sense of duty and pride going out into the community and doing what you can to help others.
While doing a fit test with the Fire Hall, they discovered that he had something wrong with his breathing and told him he would need to see a doctor and find out why. Shortly after the doctors did a scan and came back with the devastating news of cancer. He has a large mass on his heart, and they need to operate. We are grateful to the Chemainus fire hall for discovering the issue and making sure that Alex saw a doctor. At first we were thinking that he just had an infection in his lungs and that was why he failed the test. We are very grateful this was caught early and we hope for the best possible outcome.
He was told to cancel everything in his life, he cannot work, go out in public or travel. He must stop all activities until the doctors can figure out how extensive the lymphoma is and what the prognosis will be.
Alex was flying to Greece in two short months to marry his fiancé Ashley, they have been together 5 years. The wedding was all paid for, the flights, hotels etc. He has had to cancel the wedding of their dreams that they had planeed for 2 years. They are devastated for sure and trying hard to get money back but many of the vendors are not issuing refunds amidst all the craziness out there right now with Covid-19.
Alex has his fiancé and their two little dogs to take care of and now with no ability to work they will fall on very hard times. He was the breadwinner and now finds it hard to concentrate on doing all that he can to beat the cancer while struggling to buy food or pay the rent. It is so hard having to worry about finances when the doctors tell you that you are in a fight for your life. Because he is self employed there is no medical EI available to him at this time.
It falls to the community to rally around Alex and Ashley and support them through this very difficult time.
Please, if you can give that would be great.
I am a friend of both Alex and Ashley. We live in Duncan Bc, Alex is living in Chemainus with Ashley and there dogs. They are planning to spend this money on Rent, car payments and groceries for the next few months. I am setting up withdrawals so they can start paying for these things as soon as funds are available to them. They will be the ones making the withdrawals and will be able to use it for what they need most. Thank you so much for helping to provide relief with they focus on his treatment and recovery.
