Help During Accident Recovery

Donation protected
After work on Friday, September 23, 2016, Kurt was on his way home and heading up the overpass to enter 580 Eastbound, on his motorcycle, when he was involved in an accident. He is alive and well and the helmet apparently saved his life! He was taken to Valley Care first and then transferred to the ICU trauma unit at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.  Lori and Lynn were finally able to see him about 10:30pm that night and he was resting and in good care, so we left about 1:30am.

He broke 7 ribs and puncutred his left lung, resulting in an "air pocket with some blood" between his lungs and his rib cage, so they put in a tube to drain it. Kurt was given an epidural drip that numbed the pain to help him breathe easier. He is also on oxygen because it hurts to breathe. Aside from the ribs, he has several road rash scrapes on his knees and shoulders and hands, but overall his is very fortunate!

He was released Tuesday from ICU into a regular room.  He is now working on increasing his oxygen saturation levels, breathing and moving around with the nurses' help.

The plan moving forward is for rehab for the same breathing and mobility issues.  The hospital staff is talking about an acute care facility for two weeks, but we are looking into a home therapy plan.

ICU cost $11,000 per day for the room only, plus services and our meager insurance only pays $100 per day.  We still have to pay regular room fees and services, as well as the follow up therapy, and we am not sure if any of that will be covered on our insurance.

We have the motorcycle insurance to pay some medical and bike repair expenses, but we still have to have them approve all these costs and pay on them.

We are working on disability insurance as an income source, but that will take weeks.

We are also working on an insurance claim for mortgage protection so we won't lose the house after we just finished saving the house from foreclosure (took three months of Lori being on the phone 6-8 hours a day every day to save the house through KeepYourHomeCalifornia.org).

We will be using the money raised here to pay bills and keep our house.  We need the funds as soon as possible of course.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.  Even $5 helps.

Kurt and Lori are so very lucky to have friends to help and we thank everyone for their thoughts, well wishes and support through Kurt's recovery.  Thank you so very very much!!!!
