Kurbis Country Caring

We are a group of friends, family, and neighbours that are helping Heather & Rick Kurbis put a warmer and maintenance-free “coat” on their home.

Heather, Rick, and family run the “Kurbis Country Market” near Dencross, MB, about 25km north of Beausejour.

Heather & Rick have been somewhat overwhelmed with the many generous offerings of support as they transition through this trying time.

As this campaign is now being shared across so many platforms (and with so many caring people), for those of you that are not familiar, Rick has an inoperable brain tumour. He is at home, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Our goal is to create a platform which people can use to offer support to the family.

This project has been in the works for some time and all offerings are greatly appreciated!

Under no obligation, if anyone feels the need to offer assistance, we hope this GoFundMe project will fulfill that need.

The Home

Although we don’t know exactly when this home was built, but we do know it was built by people who wanted it to last.

The builders used what is known as “crib construction”.   The exterior walls are built much like a log home with 2” x 4” lumber stacked one on top of the other, on the flat.   Kinda like having bowling alley lanes for walls - over 7 - 60’ long bowling alley lanes on edge for this house !

This makes for very strong walls!  It also make things like insulation (and running electrical, as Rick discovered) a little more complicated.

Our Goal

Although it is late in the construction season, we know that if we all contribute what we can - be it labour, monies, or other support, we can get this home ready for the next season.   Winter is coming!

When our ancestors settled this area over one hundred years ago, they would often build several homes together.   We know in 2018 this spirit is still strong!

Monies raised will be spent on the following-

1.  Repair of wood structure.
Although this home was built to withstand a tornado - and has a newer, concrete foundation - the elements have taken their toll.

Before we start making it “pretty”, rotten and damaged wood will be replaced.

Repair Materials budget is $1000.00

2.  Keeping out the wind.

Much like a log home, this “stacked wood” construction does not have poly vapour barrier on the inside or Tyvek on the outside. The (sometimes) cruel north winds can creep through the many joints in the “stacked” wood walls.

We will wrap the home with exterior house wrap.

Home Wrap Materials budget is $500.00

3. Keeping in the heat.

Up to 35% of a home’s heat is lost through the walls.  If monies allow, we would like to wrap the exterior of the house with 2” of  rigid insulation.

Although “soft” woods like spruce can have an R-value of up to 1.4 per inch, adding 2” of rigid insulation will more than triple the insulation value of the existing, solid wood walls.

Insulation Materials budget is $6500.00

4. Letting in the sunshine.

If monies allow,  we would like to replace the windows and doors.

Door & Window budget is $8000.00

5.  Making it “pretty”.

Although Heather and Rick have had some disagreement on the “final touches”, we think we can accommodate both tastes.

Rick would like to keep the original “character” and “charm” of the original 4” beveled cedar siding - highlighting the grain and natural beauty of the wood.

Heather would like something simlar, but without the maintenance of raw wood.

We know we can find a modern exterior finish that looks like real wood, but ages much better.   A high quality vinyl siding will do the trick.

Exterior Finish Materials budget is $5000.00

Total project materials budget is $21 000.00
