Kugluktuk Grizzlies Girls Soccer Team

The Kugluktuk Grizzlies Sports Association started in 1998 as a way to bring positivity and hope to students who were struggling. Since this start up, suicide rates have dropped significantly among this age group and provides a positive outlet for students in the community. Students had a safe space to go and participate in something they loved to do — play sports. Now, several years later, we are continuing to see the benefits that sports have on children, especially those from remote communities in the Northern Canada.

Despite the struggles that these students still face in their day-to-day lives, they continue to show up for each practice with a willingness to learn and to better themselves. The Nunavut Futsal Territorial Championships is a chance for the Kugluktuk Girls Soccer Team to compete against other teams from around the territory. This is an amazing opportunity for the girls to explore different parts of Nunavut and travel to a location outside of their community. It is also an opportunity for the girls to qualify to play for the Arctic Winter Games in Nunavut.

As you can imagine, travel costs in Nunavut are substantial. We are looking to raise $8000 to help pay for accommodations, meals, transportation, and tournament fees. We look to provide equal opportunity to all girls regardless of sociodemographic challenges. We're hoping to procure socks, shin pads, balls and shorts to ensure that every single girl that comes out to participate and work hard is able to do so safely and comfortably. We do the best we can in providing the girls with quality coaching and equipment. This money will help ensure our athletes are able to participate in competitive tournaments, an opportunity of a life time for these young girls.

At the end of the day, having fun is the most important aspect for us here in Kugluktuk. These girls just love playing soccer. We're playing 3 or 4 times a week and it's almost impossible to get them to head home. The soccer field/gymnasium is one of very few places girls in the community can feel safe in a positive atmosphere. We're hoping to provide this safe place for more and more youth as our program expands.
