Support for Black Migrants and Asylum Seekers in Tijuana During COVID-19
As COVID-19 spreads throughout Mexico and many people lose their livelihoods, migrants and asylum seekers at the northern border are particularly vulnerable.
Many of us in the border region have personally been volunteering and are working hard to provide shelter and food to families with few resources.
However, especially now due to social distancing measures, space is limited. Thousands of migrants and asylum seekers from Haiti, Africa, and Central America living in Tijuana are struggling to survive. They need support now more than ever.
As stores and restaurants close down around the city, many migrants have been laid off. Others who work in the informal economy, such as street vendors, are also seeing their livelihoods dry up. Most of these workers live hand-to-mouth, with few or no savings. Every day without work makes it harder to meet their basic needs, such as food, rent, and cleaning supplies.
The Mexican government has been slow to provide emergency relief funds for anyone, much less for migrants, many of whom are undocumented. Among those migrants excluded from emergency relief include pregnant women, the elderly, and people with serious underlying health conditions such as diabetes, who are especially vulnerable to COVID-19.
Migrants and asylum seekers in Tijuana have long faced racial discrimination, food and housing insecurity, and threats of physical violence. With the pandemic, their lives and well-being are even more endangered. We received a grant to support migrant families who are on the metering list, but many Haitians and Africans who have lost their jobs don’t qualify for the grant because they’ve been residing in Tijuana for the past few years.
We can’t turn a blind eye to our neighbors in need.
That’s why we’re raising funds to provide crucial food, cleaning supplies, and rent support during these challenging times. We understand that many individuals have been personally and economically impacted by this pandemic.
