Krystian's every breath

My name is Agnieszka and I'm a mother of a 13-year-old boy called Krystian who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).
DMD is the most common and the severe version of progressive muscular dystrophies.
Duchenne disease effects not only the muscles of the limbs, but also various organs such as the heart, respiratory system, chest.

Until the age of 5, we didn't detect the symptoms of this disease and unfortunately, Krystian condition was spotted to late and his continued to deteriorate. He has missed out on things that others children take for granted. He didn't run, skip, climb and had problems getting up off floor, out of chairs and often fell over.
At the age of 8, Krystian ceased to walk completely. For 3 months we were locked in the house waiting for a wheelchair to arrive. Since then, the disease has progressed rapidly.

Currently, Krystian's can only move around in a electric wheelchair as he simply doesn't have the muscle power in his arms and legs to get around without it. To date, Krystain can only move his hands and fingers. Muscular contractures have started to appear. We are permanently under the care of a neurologist, cardiologist, pediatrician, physiotherapist and psychologist.

As you can imagine, we are constantly looking for help from home and abroad and have tried to delay the progression of the disease by administering the recommended steroids.
Krystain has taken part in a two-year neupogen test program in Poland at the Białystok Clinic. Unfortunately, Krystian has not respond to any pharmacological medications or treatment so far.

Krystian is a very smart, resolute boy and is fully aware of his illness. He often ask very difficult questions, to which we try to give sincere answers such as "how much time do I have left?" It is heart breaking for all of us as you can imagine.

Last year was extremely difficult for us. Within 5 months there was a significant spinal curvature (over 56 °) which has affected the respiratory efficiency and general working of his internal organs.
The only option available is a operation to try and straighten his spine which will not only improve his posture and body functions, but will allow him to breathe easier, improve the working of the heart and circulatory system.
Not going ahead with the operation will reduce Krystains life expectancy by several years.

The operation date was scheduled for January this year. Three weeks ago, we accidentally find out that the date was to be postponed to April / May 2018.
Taking into account Krystian's condition and respiratory efficiency, he will not be eligible for this operation on rescheduled date.
We have appealed against this decision and the surgeon is aware of this. However, he is covered by administrative matters, the lack of available beds and the he also has annual leave in February/March.

We all feel helpless and cheated at the moment as we've waited for this operation for over half a year and we was assured that Krystian still had time should the operation had gone ahead as planned in January.

At the moment, after additional consultations with an anaesthesiologist, we know that surgery must be carried out now, because due to the results of respiratory functions, Krystian can not wait any longer. The only way out at the moment is to go private.
We contacted an experienced doctor in Poland, who has already carried out many operations with the boys with DMD with full success and having read the documentation, he has confirmed our worst fears and concerns and has set a deadline for February 3, 2018. The costs of surgery, hospital stay, examinations, orthopedic equipment and rehabilitation after surgery exceed our financial capabilities due to the short period we have to raise the funds

This is why we have turn to you urgently requesting help to save our son's life.
So far, we have tried to deal with this ourselves, but the moment has come were we must ask for your help, although it is very difficult for us.

Dlatego zwracamy się do Panstwa z ogromną prośbą o pomoc i wsparcie naszych działań w walce o każdy kolejny dzień zycia naszego syna.
